I Can't Even Imagine Watching

I was on CBC Radio One today, on the show Q, talking about "Hallelujah." The podcast is here--I start around 18 minutes in.

CBC listeners, the "Hallelujah" essay is here.

For regular readers, new content very soon. And possibly more on Hallelujah (!), or at least Jeff Buckley, since apparently not everyone agrees with me about him.

Should you find more time to examine Hallelujah as a pop culture phenomenon, it'd be very interesting to learn about the overlay of commercial/industrial factors.

When it comes to the song's use - and the use of specific recordings - what's the process in those circumstances which form your tally? Whether it be in the lists of choices for four of five shows in the Idol franchise, or, on US network television etc. - how does the song get there, and, how has this shaped the historical public awareness of Hallelujah?

On a minor, but, related note - John Cale's version heard in the movie Shrek, but Rufus Wainwright's recording is on the movie soundtrack. Is this, as some suggest, due to Wainwright being signed to Dreamworks? Just wondering if anyone does have a conclusive explanation for something that often is cause for confusion.
